Petition Text
Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
• Historic O'Keefe Ranch, located near Vernon, British Columbia, was established in 1867 and represents one of the earliest ranching settlements in the Okanagan Valley;
• The Ranch marked the end of the historic wagon road into the Okanagan Valley, served as a meeting place with the Syilx (Okanagan) People, and developed into a self-sustaining community with a post office, blacksmith shops, grist mill, church, cemetery, residences and working ranch lands;
• Its original buildings, artifacts, archival records and cultural landscapes provide an irreplaceable record of early settlement, agriculture, transportation, commerce and community life in British Columbia's Interior;
• Historic O'Keefe Ranch provides a unique educational experience that cannot be fully replicated through books or media. Its history must be experienced firsthand to appreciate the lives, challenges and contributions of those who came before us;
• The preservation of this historic site and its educational heritage for future generations is of significant public interest.
We, the undersigned, Citizens and Residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to Work with Parks Canada, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, the City of Vernon, the Syilx (Okanagan) Nation and community heritage organizations to assess Historic O'Keefe Ranch for National Historic Site designation and explore federal measures to support its long-term preservation and educational heritage for future generations.
