Petition to the Minister of National Defence
Whereas:
• The Naval Museum of Alberta Society (NMAS) owns and operates the Commodore Laraine Orthlieb Naval Training Centre (CLONTC) on leased property co-located on the site of Calgary’s Naval Reserve Division HMCS Tecumseh;
• The building is owned and operated by NMAS, a not for profit society that has paid all the construction and maintenance costs since 1988;
• The building houses warehouse and shop spaces supporting The Military Museums of Calgary, the largest tri-service DND museum in Western Canada, three cadet corps and an innovative bridge simulator;
• The Department of National Defence has advised that they will not extend NMAS’ land lease beyond 2028, and has indicated that NMAS and associated groups using the facility must vacate the premise prior to the lease end date and the facility may be slated for demolition; and
• • The loss of the CLONTC will very negatively impact NMAS, the Naval Museum of Alberta, three cadet corps, and HMCS Tecumseh, specifically in the areas of training, recruiting and finances.
We, the undersigned, citizens or residents of Canada, call upon the Minister of National Defence to commit to working with the Commodore Laraine Orthlieb Naval Training Centre building owner and occupants to extend the land lease and develop a long-term solution that sustains access to and use of the facility to continue to support the Naval Museum of Alberta, HMCS Tecumseh, cadet corps, and the naval community.
