Petition to the Minister of National Defence
Whereas:
• the Government of Canada has announced the construction of the River-class destroyer (Canadian surface combatant) based on BAE Systems’ Type 26 warship, and
• given these 15 ships will be named for rivers in Canada with 4 rivers all ready assigned, and
• given the selection of an indigenous named river would be seen as an act of reconciliation, and
• given the name the name "Petitcodiac" is derived from the Mi'kmaq word "Petigotiag" meaning: "river that bends around back" or "river that bends like a bow", and
• given the importance of the Petitcodiac River to the Province of New Brunswick, the United Empire Loyalists and Acadian settlers who settled along its banks, the world famous Tidal Bore and the village at the head waters baring its name:
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Minister of National Defence to to name one of the new River-class destroyers HMCS Petitcodiac.
