Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• The Burrard Inlet is an ecologically crucial and sensitive coastal ecosystem supporting diverse marine and terrestrial life;
• The Inlet is the origin of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, who has stewarded these waters since time immemorial and who are actively restoring the inlet's health through improving water quality, enabling clam harvesting and salmon habitat to grow back from historical lows, as well as reviving shoreline health in their unceded territory;
• Dredging disturbs contaminated sediments, degrading water quality, harming fish habitat, and worsening the cumulative environmental and health impacts;
• Canada has committed to uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the principle of free, prior, and informed consent;
• Federal legislation establishes responsibilities to protect fish habitat, biodiversity, and the public interest in navigable waters; and
• Climate action requires evidence-based decision-making that prioritizes ecosystem protection and Indigenous rights.
We, the undersigned, residents and citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1. Halt federal approvals, permits, or authorizations for any dredging activities in the Burrard Inlet that pose significant environmental, cultural, or cumulative risks; 2. Support the Tsleil-Waututh Nation’s responsibility to steward the inlet by respecting extensive Tsleil Waututh knowledge and evidence-based assessments of how to restore the Inlet’s long-term health; 3. Conduct transparent, independent, and publicly accessible environmental assessments of any proposed dredging, including full consideration of cumulative impacts; 4. Work collaboratively with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and other affected Indigenous Nations to prioritize habitat restoration, marine protection, and long-term ecological health in the Burrard Inlet; and 5. Uphold Canada’s commitments to reconciliation, environmental protection, and climate action in all federal decisions related to the Burrard Inlet.
