Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:

• Canada has a proud history of pioneering work on weather radar since World War II including the implementation of the first national weather radar network in Canada by 1997;

• The research conducted by ECCC scientists and their expertise are essential for improved detection and issuance of warnings to Canadians of extreme weather events;

• Early detection and warnings are integral to reduce fatalities and injuries, mitigate against property damage, and increase community resilience;

• Canadians have experienced several severe weather events this summer including tornados, wildfires, and flooding; and

• Eliminating dedicated meteorological and atmospheric scientists weakens Canada’s ability to address and prepare for weather related threats.

We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1. Reverse the cuts made to ECCC's Science and Technology Branch in radar and severe weather research to sustain the exemplary research by these integral scientists and protect Canadians from harmful weather events; and

2. Preserve research and scientific capacity within Environment and Climate Change Canada, specifically in the fields of severe weather, radar meteorology, and observational technology to ensure public confidence and sense of security.
