Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
• The citizens in question obtained their licences after thorough vetting as required by law and they remain subject to ongoing eligibility monitoring;
• The Government of Canada already recognizes their eligibility to possess these legally acquired firearms;
• Current restrictions prevent the legal transfer of firearms between individuals holding the required licences;
• Thousands of Canadian families wish to retain firearms passed down by their parents or grandparents, many of which constitute an irreplaceable family, historical or commemorative legacy;
• Some legally owned firearms bear witness to significant events in Canadian military history and are precious mementoes inherited from veterans;
• Sport shooting is a legal activity practised in a safe and regulated environment;
• Legally authorized firearm owners, including sport shooters, are unable to repair certain inoperable firearms due to a lack of available parts, or to legally replace them; and
• Preventing violence involves, among other things, combatting illegal firearms trafficking and organized crime and supporting mental health services.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to allow eligible holders of a firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence to legally acquire, transfer and bequeath firearms to other individuals holding the required licences, to preserve firearms of historical or heritage interest where there is no eligible heir, and to allow participants in recognized sport shooting disciplines to replace firearms that have become inoperable or beyond repair.
