Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 million women and girls worldwide;
• Endometriosis affects over 2 million women and girls in Canada;
• Endometriosis is heavily underfunded in Canada;
• Historically, endometriosis-related projects received a disproportionately low amount of funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR);
• Canada remains one of the only G7 nations without a coordinated, ring-fenced federal funding line or standardized clinical guidelines for the disease;
• The diagnosis delay for endometriosis averages 11-12 years;
• Girls are not able to access proper endometriosis education in the current recommended educational system; and
• A mandatory endometriosis educational program must be implemented and pushed to correct these discrepancies.
We, the undersigned, residents and citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1. Fund a national advisory board on endometriosis education, tasked with developing evidence-based educational standards and resources for use in secondary schools across Canada, developing a national strategy regarding the proper education of young girls about the disease, working to increase public awareness and allow young girls to recognize signs of the disease early on; and 2. Additionally, work with provincial and territorial governments to support the mandatory inclusion of endometriosis education in science, PHE, and/or reproductive health curricula.
