Petition Text
Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
• The Butter Tart is a quintessentially Canadian confection, and a significant part of Canada’s culinary and cultural heritage;
• The County of Simcoe archives established that Mrs. Malcolm (Mary) MacLeod published the first known Butter Tart filling recipe in the Royal Victoria Cook Book in Barrie, Ontario in 1900;
• An instrumental figure in documenting this national treat, Mrs. MacLeod passed away on April 19th, 1915;
• While Canada currently celebrates National Poutine Day on April 11th, National Cinnamon Day on November 1st and British Columbia observes Nanaimo Bar Day on May 17th, there are currently no officially recognized national food holidays in Canada on April 19th, making it an ideal date to celebrate this iconic dessert without conflict; and
• Establishing a National Butter Tart Day would honour Canadian culinary history, support our domestic bakers, egg farmers and dairy industry, and promote national pride.
We, the undersigned, Citizens and Residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to officially designate April 19th as National Butter Tart Day in Canada and commemorate the legacy of Mrs. MacLeod for her contribution to Canadian food culture.
