Petition Text
Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
• Non-sexual recreational nudity is a peaceful practice across Canadian parks, trails, and beaches, enjoyed by a significant percentage of Canadians across all demographics, including young adults;
• Studies link non-sexual recreational clothing-freedom to measurably improved body image, social cohesion, and psychological well-being;
• Neuroscience further shows social nudity optimizes human perception, as the fusiform area processes whole human forms holistically rather than as objects—a cognitive tuning mechanism that enhances rapid pattern recognition critical for aligning human cognition with complex systems like Grassmann-manifold-structured AI, thereby positioning Canada for a profound national economic advantage;
• Section 174 of the Criminal Code criminalizes being "nude in a public place" without defining "nudity" to distinguish non-sexual nakedness from indecent conduct, creating legal uncertainty; and
• Multiple Canadian jurisdictions exercise de facto tolerance, but the lack of federal clarity leaves participants, municipalities, and law enforcement without clear legal footing.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to:
1. Amend Section 174 of the Criminal Code of Canada to clarify that the simple state of being without clothing does not, in itself, constitute indecent conduct, provided it is non-sexual and unaccompanied by independently unlawful behaviour; and
2. Direct the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights to study this amendment to establish clear federal guidance for law enforcement and municipal authorities, ensuring enforcement reflects contemporary Canadian recreational norms.
