Petition Text
Petition to the Minister of Veterans Affairs
Whereas:
• Approximately 4,500 Canadian Armed Forces members served in the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War under Operation FRICTION, marking Canada’s first offensive military action since the Korean War and a milestone for women in combat roles;
• The Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs reconfirmed in 2025 that the Persian Gulf War was a war, acknowledging that while no CAF members died in active combat, veterans suffered lasting injuries and subsequent service-attributable deaths;
• The National War Memorial in Ottawa is Canada’s central place of remembrance and bears the dates of major operations, including 1899–1902, 1914–1918, 1939–1945, 1950–1953, and 2001–2014; and
• Despite parliamentary recognition, the dates 1990–1991 remain missing from the National War Memorial.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Minister of Veterans Affairs to:1. Formally recognize the service and sacrifice of Canadian Persian Gulf War veterans by adding the dates 1990–1991 to the National War Memorial in Ottawa; and 2. Rededicate the National War Memorial upon adding these dates to permanently commemorate Canada’s service in the Persian Gulf War alongside other major conflicts.
