Petition to theHouse of Commons
Whereas:
• Federal government employees, including but not limited to correctional officers, lose their pension entitlements despite having a recognized occupational disability, creating inequity compared with provincial workers and financially penalizing those who have served our country;
• An officer who suffered serious injuries in the course of their duties illustrates the risks faced by these workers and the need to protect their pension entitlements;
• The GECA provides compensation, but the PSSA does not protect pensions, and no mechanism equivalent to section 116 of the LATMP exists at the federal level;
• The lack of consistency between the GECA, the PSSA and provincial agencies results in a loss of rights despite a recognized disability; and
• It is imperative to take quick action to ensure the protection of federal government employees’ pension entitlements.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1 – Amend the PSSA so that any recognized occupational disability entitles the employee to an immediate pension without actuarial reduction, with continued contributions, and that this rule applies to both current cases and to those already processed;
2 – Ensure consistency between the GECA, the PSSA and provincial agencies so that a recognized disability does not result in the loss of pension entitlements;
3 – Adopt a mechanism equivalent to section 116 of the LATMP, including the continuation of employer contributions during a severe and prolonged disability;
4 – Provide remedies equivalent to section 32 of the LATMP; and
5 – Produce a report on the implementation and impacts of these changes.
