Petition to the Prime Minister
Whereas:
• Since 9 January 2026, Iranians have faced escalating state violence, internet blackouts, mass arbitrary arrests, and grave, ongoing human rights violations, which have disabled them from complying with time sensitive Canadian immigration requirements and deadlines set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Immigration and Refugee Board, and the Federal Court;
• Iranians in Canada, including authorised immigration representatives, are experiencing profound vicarious trauma, grief, anxiety, and survivor’s guilt as they witness these events, similarly impairing their ability to meet time sensitive immigration requirements and deadlines;
• Requesting necessary extensions on a case by case basis imposes significant and unnecessary burden, exacerbates mental health distress due to time pressures and uncertainty, and needlessly strains administrative and judicial systems;
• The combined effects of the situation in Iran, for Iranians in Iran and Canada, have created exceptional circumstances that risk missed deadlines, status loss, and other serious immigration consequences that reflect the crisis rather than applicants’ merits or intentions; and
• Canada has consistently affirmed its commitment to human rights, procedural fairness, and natural justice requiring proactive remedies.
We, the undersigned, citizens and permanent residents of Canada, call upon the Prime Minister to:
1. Implement an automatic, blanket extension of status, submission, and filing deadlines with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, and the Federal Court, for all Iranians for at least 30 days;
2. Provide corresponding deadline and compliance relief to Canadian-Iranian immigration representatives who are directly affected by the crisis; and
3. Commit to review and extend these measures, as may be required.
