Petition to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
Whereas:
• The immigration status of victims of family or domestic violence often depends on the abusive spouse;
• Canada has created a temporary resident permit for victims of family violence, which allows victims to escape their situation and which gives them a new future;
• The temporary resident permit for victims of family violence has four eligibility requirements, including "experiencing abuse or neglect by your spouse or common-law partner (your abuser) while in Canada”;
• Victims of family or domestic violence who experienced violence in Canada but were able to leave the abusive relationship while in Canada are regularly excluded from making a request because of this requirement, which puts them in a vulnerable situation; and
• Family violence can continue even after the relationship ends, which is known as post-separation abuse.
We, the undersigned,citizens of Canada, call upon the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to: 1. Review the eligibility requirements and directives of the temporary resident permit for victims of family violence in order to further protect victims during and after their relationship with an abusive spouse; and 2. Review the complexity of the process for the temporary resident permit for victims of family violence in order to simplify and speed up immigration requests.
