Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• Alexander Ovechkin has publicly and repeatedly expressed his support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and, in 2017, announced the creation of a movement called “Putin Team” to unite supporters of Vladimir Putin;
• In September 2026, Alexander Ovechkin appeared in an election campaign video promoting United Russia, Russia’s governing political party, ahead of the September 2026 State Duma elections; and
• Canada has imposed sanctions on individuals who support the Russian regime in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and individuals sanctioned by Canada may be rendered inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to review Alexander Ovechkin’s activities and public support for the Russian government and consider imposing sanctions against him under applicable Canadian law, with the effect of rendering him inadmissible to Canada.
