Petition Text
Petition to the Minister of National Defence
Whereas:
• Canada has significantly reduced its involvement in UN peacekeeping missions from over 3,000 in 1993 to just 26 today;
• Never implemented the 600 troops committed in 2017;
• Announced further reduction this past July, which would bring Canada to just 4 or 5 military personnel in the UN;
• The UN is currently running 11 Peacekeeping operations supported by 45,451 personnel from 119 countries;
• Countries far poorer than Canada provide a large number of military and police forces (e.g. 4,339 from Nepal);
• While poorer countries are compensated for their support, their people are putting their lives on the line to support peace and deserve top technical support that Canada could provide;
• Demand for peacekeeping will continue to increase due to conflicts from great power misconduct, climate change and health catastrophes (Congo is a perfect example of an area in need of more peacekeepers where Canada has made a positive contribution in the past);
• Canada already has a reputation for the high-quality expertise of its senior officers and troops;
• Peacekeeping work is becoming highly technical with the use of drones and AI tools; and
• Canada has significant expertise in AI and drone technology.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to uphold and augment Canada’s reputation as a peacekeeping nation by increasing its contribution to UN peacekeeping staffing to at least 400, providing the senior officer leadership we are famous for and complementing it with troops knowledgeable in the latest technology to train soldiers from other nations in these advanced systems.
