Petition Text
Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
Whereas:
• The Digital Services Tax Act was repealed in July 2025 with the aim of advancing trade negotiations with the United States;
• This tax concession has yielded no lasting benefits, as U.S. tariffs against Canada continued to be imposed, renewed and expanded following the repeal, and deprived the Canadian Treasury of significant tax revenue;
• The repeal set a dangerous precedent by directly undermining a Canadian tax law duly passed by the House of Commons. That law was repealed in exchange for non-binding trade assurances from a foreign government, thereby threatening our entire tax system; and
• Large technology companies operate in Canada and generate substantial revenue without making a proportionate tax contribution compared with other companies operating in Canada.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to 1. Immediately reinstate the digital services tax in the form adopted in 2024; and 2. Publish a public report on the tax revenue foregone by the Canadian Treasury since the repeal, with the utmost transparency.
