Petition Text
Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• The 1953 Korean War Armistice was intended as a temporary measure, yet 70 years later no formal peace treaty exists, leaving the war technically unresolved;
• Over 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War and 516 gave their lives for peace and freedom in Korea, forging a lasting bond between our countries;
• Canada, the third-largest troop contributor to that war and a trusted Middle Power with diplomatic ties to North Korea since 2001, is well placed to support dialogue and de-escalation;
• The Canada-Republic of Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, strengthened by the 2025 Security and Defence Cooperation Partnership, affirms both nations’ commitment to stability on the Korea Peninsula;
• South Korea is Canada’s seventh-largest merchandise trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching about $24.5 billion in 2025, nearly doubling under the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement;
• Exports generated about 3.9 million Canadian jobs directly and indirectly in 2024, according to Statistics Canada, meaning instability on the Peninsula would put workers at risk; and
• The absence of a peace agreement fuels military tension and humanitarian suffering in the region.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Publicly support international efforts to negotiate a formal peace agreement replacing the 1953 armistice;
2. Work with allies, including the Republic of Korea, to advance multilateral diplomacy toward durable peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula;
3. Table in Parliament a report outlining Canada’s strategy for a permanent peace settlement; and
4. Demonstrate global leadership by advocating, in international forums, for peaceful conflict resolution and a formal peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula.
