Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• The protection of human health, biodiversity, pollinators, and the environment must remain the primary consideration in the evaluation and approval of pesticides;
• Several pesticides have been banned or restricted due to scientific concerns regarding their potential impacts on human health and ecosystems;
• The provisions introduced through Bill C-30 raise concerns about the possible reauthorization or continued use of pesticides despite identified risks; and
• Canadians deserve a transparent, independent, and science-based regulatory process for decisions affecting public health and the environment.
We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, concerned about the protection of human health, biodiversity, and the environment, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Repeal or amend the provisions of Bill C-30 that permit the approval or reapproval of pesticides based on considerations other than the protection of human health and the environment;
2. Preserve the independence and scientific integrity of pesticide evaluations conducted by regulatory authorities;
3. Strengthen the precautionary principle in all decisions regarding pesticide approvals and reauthorizations;
4. Ensure meaningful public consultation before any previously banned or restricted pesticide is reauthorized;
5. Publish the full scientific rationale supporting any decision to approve, reapprove, or maintain a pesticide on the market;
6. Strengthen regulations governing pesticide use across Canada to better protect public health, biodiversity, pollinators, soil quality, and water resources;
7. Align Canadian pesticide regulations with leading international best practices, including the more protective standards adopted in many European countries where they provide stronger safeguards for human health and the environment; and
8. Support the reduction of dependence on chemical pesticides by promoting sustainable agriculture, integrated pest management, and safer alternatives.
