Petition Text
Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• Canadians want to make informed choices about the products they buy, yet the climate impact of most everyday products remains invisible at the point of purchase;
• Many producers already measure and disclose the climate (CO2e) footprint of their products using the internationally-recognized ISO 14067 standard, showing that this information is practical, feasible, and increasingly common;
• A clear, standardized climate footprint label would turn that existing work into a powerful market signal — because when climate impact is visible, consumers can reward lower-emission products and producers have a strong incentive to reduce emissions;
• Jurisdictions around the world, including the European Union, are moving toward mandatory climate and environmental disclosure on products, creating an opportunity for Canada to lead and to help shape global norms; and
• Standardized labelling systems — such as Nutrition Facts and EnerGuide ratings — have already proven that simple, comparable information can drive innovation, improve performance, and empower consumers.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to develop and implement a mandatory, standardized, and comparable climate (CO2e) footprint label for consumer products sold in Canada, so that Canadians can make informed choices, lower-emission producers are recognized and rewarded, and Canada can help accelerate global emissions reductions at meaningful scale.
