Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
Whereas:
• There are over 280 remote communities in Canada, more than 200 of which are reliant on fossil fuel generation for power, resulting in high energy costs, pollution, and vulnerability to supply disruptions;
• Indigenous, rural, and remote communities are leading the development of clean energy solutions, including marine renewable energy, that can provide reliable, locally controlled, low-carbon power;
• Community-led clean energy projects create economic opportunities, support skilled jobs, strengthen energy sovereignty, and support critical infrastructure in remote, coastal, and Arctic regions;
• Early-stage renewable energy projects, including tidal and wave energy, face significant upfront costs and barriers due to fragmented, oversubscribed, or expiring federal funding programs; and
• The Wah-ila-toos program plays a critical role in supporting Indigenous-led and community-driven energy transition projects but requires renewed and expanded funding to meet growing demand.
We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to: 1. Renew, expand, and provide long-term, stable funding for the Wah-ila-toos program to support clean energy, energy efficiency, and capacity-building projects in Indigenous, rural, and remote communities;
