Petition Text
Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• Post-secondary education is increasingly necessary for participation in the Canadian economy, yet many students graduate with significant levels of debt.
• The rising cost of living, including housing, food, and transportation, has made it increasingly difficult for recent graduates to meet their financial obligations
• Many graduates are required to begin repayment of student loans prior to securing stable, full-time employment
• Student debt contributes to prolonged financial insecurity and may delay important life decisions, including career development and financial independence.
We, the undersigned, Citizens (or permanent residents) of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to 1. Extend the student loan grace period from six months to a minimum of twelve months to better support graduates transitioning into the workforce.
2. Permit the commencement of student loan repayment only once individuals have reached a stable and sufficient level of income.
3. Introduce more flexible repayment terms to reduce financial strain during the early stages of graduates’ careers.
4. Enhance and expand income-based repayment programs to ensure greater accessibility, effectiveness, and fairness.
5. Ensure that student loan repayment policies are responsive to current economic conditions and promote equitable outcomes for all graduates
