Petition Text
Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
• Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects over 4 million people in Canada and is a growing public health concern;
• CKD is associated with significant morbidity, premature mortality, and substantial costs to Canada’s health care system;
• Many individuals remain undiagnosed until the advanced stages of CKD, limiting opportunities for early intervention;
• Prevention strategies, earlier detection, coordinated care pathways, and equitable access to treatment can improve outcomes and reduce health system pressures;
• Disparities in CKD incidence and outcomes disproportionately affect Indigenous Peoples, racialized communities, rural and remote populations, and individuals with lower socio-economic status; and
• The Government of Canada has a role in supporting national strategies, funding research, strengthening data collection, working collaboratively with provinces and territories, and advancing equity in health outcomes.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Adopt and implement the Kidney Foundation’s National Strategic Framework for Chronic Kidney Disease;
2. Work collaboratively with provinces, territories, Indigenous partners, people with lived experience and system leaders to advance prevention, early detection, and equitable access to care;
3. Establish a coordinated, nationwide data collection and surveillance strategy to better understand the burden and progression of CKD in Canada;
4. Prioritize kidney health research to drive innovation and improve diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes; and
5. Report publicly on progress toward measurable objectives to reduce the burden of CKD in Canada.
