Petition Text
Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• Police and peace officers face daily risks in the service of our communities;
• Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty remind us of the costs involved in maintaining a free and civilized society;
• The Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Ribbon, a black and blue looped ribbon bearing a generic badge, is widely recognised by policing organisations across Canada as the national symbol of mourning for officers killed in the line of duty;
• Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day is commemorated annually on the last Sunday of September with the National Memorial Service held on Parliament Hill; and
• The Government of Canada has the authority to formally recognize national commemorative symbols and to direct federal departments and agencies in their observance.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to formally recognize, by Order in Council or official proclamation, the Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Ribbon as the official national symbol of remembrance for officers who die in the line of duty and to direct federal departments, agencies, and Crown corporations to adopt and display the ribbon during National Memorial Week and in the aftermath of a line-of-duty death.
