Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
• The development of new fossil fuel projects and the growth and expansion of existing projects must be avoided at all costs;
• Limiting large sources of greenhouse gas emissions quickly is the best way to prevent the most harmful effects of climate change and protect both the planet and the global population;
• The proposed carbon capture and sequestration plans included in the Pathways Alliance project are not enough to make up for the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the use of the oil and gas it ships and the technology lock-in it will support;
• Even if the carbon capture and sequestration plans are effective, the net environmental impact of the pipeline will still be overwhelmingly negative, as the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions associated with oil and gas occur during use and not production/extraction;
• These are considered “Scope 3” emissions, which this project does not recognize or attempt to account for; and
• Scientists, the United Nations, and even the Government of Canada have all agreed that human-caused climate change must be stopped, and this pipeline represents Canada falling even further behind on this issue.
We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to stop all plans related to the Pathways Alliance pipeline project, put forward by Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Carney, due to the devastating effects of climate change that it will perpetuate.
